Dycal, Cavitec, Zinc oxide eugenol(ZOE), Vitrebond, Fuji Lining LC and Timeline were
studied with agar diffusion method to determine their antibacterial activity on
streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) and Actinomyces viscosus(A. viscosus) frequently
observed in deep carious dentin. Fluoride release from 3 fluoride - containing light-cured
liners/bases (Vitrebond, Fuji Lining LC, Timeline) was measured with Fluoride
combination electrode (Orion Research, 96-09) to determine the correlation between
fluoride and antibacterial activity. The results were as follows;
1. Dycal, ZOE, Cavitec, Vitrebond and Fuji Lining LC produced zones of inhibition of
growth of S. mutans and A. vircosus.
2. Dycal, ZOE retained persistent antibacterial activities after setting.
3. Antibacterial activities of Cavitec, Vitrebond and Fuji Lining LC were reduced or
completely lost after setting,
4. Vitrebond released significantly more fluoride than Fuji Lining LC and Timeline, and
the amount and pattern of fluoride release was the same for Fuji Lining LC and
Timeline. All of the materials had a significant decrease in fluoride release over the first
3 days.
From these studies performed on in vitro antibacterial activity and fluoride release,
Dycal, ZOE, Cavitec, Vitrebond and Fuji Lining LC seemed to have antibacterial
activities on carious dentin and antibacterial activities of fluoride-containing cavity
liners/bases appeared to be caused not only by fluoride but by other factors.
